MEP meets with National Farmers Union
Monday, 10th January 2011
Roger Helmer, an East Midlands Conservative MEP, met with representatives of the NFU during a meeting last week at Southfields Farm, Somerby, Melton Mowbray
They were dairy farmers eagerly awaiting the Commission’s proposals to address dysfunctions in the dairy supply chain. The plans look promising, providing Defra give them their full backing. The NFU representatives briefed Mr. Helmer on their wish to see exclusivity considered alongside volume specification so that producers are not tied in to one milk buyer, and he agreed to take up those issues on their behalf in Brussels.
The NFU was founded in 1908 and is financed by members' subscriptions. They are not affiliated to any political party. Today, their trade association is the largest farming organisation in the UK, providing a strong and respected voice for the industry supporting the needs of its members locally, nationally and internationally.
