Summary of Strasbourg Session (13 - 16 September 2004)
Main Events of the Week:
Stability Pact
Parliament debated changes proposed to the Growth and Stability Pact
Jonathan Evans said: "The new guidelines merely buried the Growth and Stability Pact while pretending to give it new life. The Commission has criticised small countries breaking the pact in the past, but the moment countries like Germany and France break their pledges, the goal posts are moved."
Burma
Parliament condemned plans by EU Foreign Ministers to attend the ASEM Summit in Hanoi.
Geoffrey Van Orden said: "The EU Foreign Ministers are sending a mixed message to the Burmese military dictatorship. They will be seen as paper tigers, not serious about their demands for democracy and human rights."
Maldives
MEPs condemned the human rights record of the Maldives and demanded the release of some 80 political prisoners
Nirj Deva said: "It is essential that maximum international pressure is applied to ensure these innocent people are released. These people are in grave danger and represent the islands' democratic future."
Iraq
Parliament debated the current situation in Iraq
Charles Tannock said: "The situation in Iraq remains precarious. Everyone now must sympathise with the Iraqi people, who yearn for stability in their country."
