Conservatives top election poll

Monday, 14 June 2004

The recent European elections have seen the Conservatives win in the East Midlands, with Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris re-elected as Conservative MEPs.

Commenting on this success, Roger Helmer MEP said:

"We are delighted that Conservatives again topped the poll in the region and are looking forward to a further five years serving the people of the East Midlands. Despite the huge volume of column inches and radio and TV airwaves dedicated to the one man UKIP show, Robert Kilroy-Silk and his party had to settle for 2nd place."

Mr Heaton-Harris added:

"Labour were the big losers in the East Midlands. Their vote collapsed, and for a governing party to come 3rd with a derisory 21% is serious. They will have real problems regaining the trust people have undoubtedly lost in them. Both Roger and myself are delighted that the people of the East Midlands have maintained their faith in us. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their confidence and elected us to represent them for another 5 years."
