‘Be proud of our National Day’ say East Midlands MEPs
East Midlands Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris have today issued a robust call for people to celebrate St George’s Day and to be proud of their country.
Both MEPs have recently taken issue with the Liberal Democrat Leader of Newcastle City Council, Peter Arnold who insisted extraordinarily that there is no such thing as England and have supported Cllr Michael Dowell who was forced to take down his St George’s flag because it had the word ‘England’ printed on it.
Speaking today, Mr Helmer said:
“During the eighties, I was privileged to live and work in Thailand for three years. Every company I visited, from the smallest to the largest, had a portrait of the King in the reception area, and most flew the national flag as well. There was no requirement to do so -- it was simply an expression of national pride.
“The Lib-Dems may believe there is no such country as England, but I know that there is, and we're proud of it. Let's keep flying the flag!”
Mr Helmer will be celebrating St George’s Day by addressing local Conservatives at a St George’s Day Dinner and Dance in Croydon.
