Local Conservative MEP supports pro-hunting vigil

Monday, 29 July 2002

East Midlands Conservative Euro-MP, Roger Helmer gave his full support to the pro- hunting campaign by joining a hunt from the East Midlands in a round the clock vigil in Parliament Square.

The Countryside Alliance has organised the vigil as part of their "Summer of Discontent" following government plans to ban hunting. The vigil is being held directly opposite New Palace Yard where MPs' cars arrive and leave. It will be manned by a different hunt every day until the "Liberty and Livelihood March" in London on September 22nd. Mr Helmer and his Conservative colleagues will be taking part in the march in September.

Roger Helmer MEP has been campaigning in the European Parliament on behalf of the Countryside to stop damaging legislation such as the Wild Game Directive. He is a keen supporter of the countryside and a member of the Countryside Alliance. Speaking from the Countryside Alliance vigil in Parliament Square he said:

"I fully support the Countryside Alliance and their "Summer of Discontent" campaign. It's about time the Labour government realised that the Countryside are not going to just accept the ban on hunting without a fight.

"I and a number of my Conservative colleagues will be taking part in the "Liberty and Livelihood March" in London on 22nd September to help support Hunts in the East Midlands. I urge anyone who can to come along and give their support."
