MEP launches Counter-Consensual Climate Conference to evaluate appropriate responses to global warming

East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has today announced that he is to host a ‘Counter Consensual Climate Conference’ in Brussels following the eruption of a new widespread debate on the subject of global warming.

The recent screening of Channel 4’s hit documentary ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’, which vigorously argued that there are still deep divisions among scientists as to the causes and extent of global warming, has led many to challenge the conventionally alarmist position on climate change.

Mr Helmer asks why people are being asked to decimate their energy use, roll back the industrial revolution, and make heroic economic sacrifices when so much uncertainty still exists and believes a proper debate on the subject is long overdue.

So he has organised his one-day Climate Change Conference in the European Parliament in Brussels next week to provide a platform for those who have reservations about the current climate alarmism, or who have concerns about the policy provisions aimed to mitigate the perceived problem to express their views.

The impressive list of speakers assembled for the Conference includes former Chancellor of the Exchequer Lord Lawson of Blaby, Roger Bootle of Capital Economics, Open Europe’s Neil O’Brien and Chris Horner, author of ‘The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming’.

The event will also be followed by a screening of the recent Channel 4 film ‘The Great Global Warming Swindle’.

Speaking today, Mr Helmer said:

“Many climatologists reject the alarmist scenario, and there have been disgraceful efforts by the establishment to silence the dissenters. So I’ve decided to organise a one-day conference in the Brussels parliament on April 18th to give a platform to the other side of the issue.” “I am delighted that Lord Lawson has agreed to be the keynote speaker for the event, for which we have a very impressive panel of speakers. The conference is open to anyone with an interest in the subject, including East Midlands electors”.

This event is a private political initiative by Mr. Helmer. He has had no funding at all from industry, think tanks or pressure groups and is funding the event entirely from his parliamentary allowances and his own resources.
