Local MEP nominated as Parliamentarian of the Year
Friday, 28th April 2006
Brussels – Local Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has been nominated for a prestigious ‘Parliamentarian of the Year’ award.
The Inaugural Conservative Movement Awards, launched by the www.conservativehome.com website, has received more nominations for Mr Helmer than any other politician. Other nominations include new Party Leader David Cameron, William Hague and Michael Howard.
One of the citations from the site by West Suffolk Conservative Future said that Mr Helmer deserved the award as “he has taken a stand to bring the EU executive to account in the face of strong pressure from all sides.” Other nominators praised him for ‘sticking to his principles’ and for ‘a patriotism we could all do well to follow’.
In a separate poll conducted by Conservative home, a grassroots campaign to ‘Reinstate Roger’ to the Conservative whip, www.reinstateroger.com has been nominated as ‘Best Campaign’. Mr Helmer lost the Conservative whip, and was sacked from the European People’s Party (EPP) group in the European Parliament in June 2005, having rocked the boat by aggressively criticising cronyism in the European institutions.
Speaking today, Mr Helmer said: “I am surprised and flattered to be recognised in this way, but all I have done is to speak up for the views of my electorate.”
