A new vision for the Conservative Party

Thursday 7th July 2005

Local MEPs launch challenging ideas for future Conservative policy

East Midlands Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris, along with other Conservative colleagues today launched an innovative Conservative vision for the future of the party.

The collection of essays, largely by serving members of the European parliament but also including US congressman Tom Feeney takes a fresh look at many of the issues facing the Conservative Party following the general election and proposes genuinely Conservative solutions to the policy options faced.

They explore vital areas as agriculture, health, tax and Europe, with Congressman Feeney (whom Roger and Chris met in Washington on June 29th), providing a view from the States, and they discuss how to apply established Conservative principles in a modern way appropriate for the 21st century.

Speaking from Strasbourg today, Roger Helmer said:

“After a third election defeat, the Party recognises the need for challenging new thinking. But rather than abandoning Conservative principles, we believe we need to apply them in innovative ways for the new century. In a word, we are about liberty and prosperity.”

Mr Heaton-Harris added:

“As part of the on-going debate in the Conservative Party, our small group has some ideas we promising ideas that we think will resonate within the electorate. We look forward to seeing some of these thoughts discussed in the forthcoming leadership contest within our party”.
