Euro-zealot has flipped, says Tory MEP

East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer has attacked the proposal by Lib-Dem MEP Bill Newton Dunn to create a new "European FBI", saying it will pass yet more powers to Brussels, yet do nothing for the security of the British people.
At a press conference in Strasbourg today, Newton Dunn launched a pamphlet proposing the creation of a new Euro-Federal police force modelled on the American FBI, claiming that this would help control cross-border crime in the EU. His ideas are based on work he commissioned from a group of college students in the USA.
Conservative MEPs attacked the proposal as a typical piece of Lib-Dem Euro-Zealotry, aimed more at securing a federal Europe than at fighting crime. They are happy to back co-operation between national police forces and exchange of information through Euro-Pol as the way forward in the fight against people-smuggling, drugs and terrorism, but they oppose the creation of yet more expensive and bureaucratic Brussels institutions.
Commenting on the initiative, Conservative Euro-MP Roger Helmer, said:
"It looks as though the Lib-Dem euro-zealot Newton Dunn has finally flipped. In his knee-jerk support for anything that helps build a federal Europe, he is proposing a massive new Brussels agency, a euro-FBI which would see foreign police given powers on the streets of our cities. This is not what most British people want. So they will know how to vote in the coming euro-elections".
