Chesterfield Conservatives raise over £100 for Ashgate Croft School

Tuesday, November 4th 2003

Chesterfield Conservatives raised over £100 for Ashgate Croft School, and attracted a top line up of guest speakers including Roger Helmer MEP and Pauline Latham OBE.

A record turn out of Chesterfield Conservatives and associates raised over £100 for Ashgate Croft School's 'A Pool for Megan' appeal; the cheque will be presented to the school next week.

The fund raising event was held at the Queen's Head Hotel and one of the guest speakers Roger Helmer MEP gave everyone a unique insight in to the European parliament.

The main issue at the moment is the new EU constitution, Roger was able to explain how all other Heads of State are informing their electorate that this is a major change in the way the European Union works, and how power and decision making will be made more at a European level than with Member States.

Other Heads of State are giving information and allowing a referendum on this important issue, except our Prime Minister Tony Blair - who would have us believe that this is no more than a 'tidying up exercise'. The fact is this gives the European Union primacy over many issues including our Courts and further reduces the areas in which Britain can use its 'veto'.

Chairman of Chesterfield Conservative Association Gary Hatton (above, centre) said "This is not a matter of pro or anti-Europeanism, the fact is that many other EU countries are giving the people the choice over this Constitution Change in a referendum so it can be debated fully. Tony Blair cannot be trusted and is using spin to present this Constitution Change in a false light, I am calling for a referendum on this issue and would urge you to write to your MP"
