Local MEPs support Countryside March

Thursday, 29 August 2002

Local Conservative MEPs, Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris, are getting ready to join the "Liberty & Livelihood March", due to take place on 22nd September in London. They will march under a banner saying "Conservative Euro-MPs: Supporting the Countryside" with their Conservative colleagues.

The march is in protest against government plans to ban hunting and will call upon the government to help rural minorities. East Midlands MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris are calling on people from the East Midlands to register to join the march and give their support to the countryside.

Roger Helmer MEP is a keen supporter of the countryside and member of the Countryside Alliance. He has been campaigning in the European Parliament to stop damaging legislation such as the Wild Game Directive. Speaking from the European Parliament in Brussels, he said:

"I and a number of my Conservative colleagues will be taking part in the "Liberty and Livelihood March" in London on 22nd September to help support Hunts in the East Midlands. I urge anyone who can, to join the march and register with the Countryside Alliance on the internet or by calling the helpline on 0900 102 0900.

"The Labour Government has a contempt for the countryside. It's time we showed them that we are not going to just accept the ban on hunting without a fight."

To join the Countryside March on 22 September 2002, people will need to register either on the website at www.countryside-alliance.com or by calling the registration hotline on 0900 102 0900
