MEPs welcome Cameron victory
Tuesday, 6th December 2005
Brussels – East Midlands Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris have today expressed their delight at David Cameron’s election as the new Conservative Leader.
Voting in the postal ballot of the 253,600 party membership ended yesterday with Mr Cameron achieving 134,446 votes over his rival, the Shadow Home Secretary David Davis’ 64,398.
Both MEPs have campaigned for Mr Cameron across the East Midlands region throughout November, believing that his strong media and electoral appeal will be attractive to sectors of the electorate where the Tories have polled badly in recent years – with women, young people, and middle-class professionals.
Speaking from Brussels, Chris Heaton-Harris said:
“This is a turning point for the Conservative Party and we are delighted that the Party has decisively elected David Cameron as its new leader. He has the personality, style and charisma to succeed and will appeal strongly to groups where the Party needs to rebuild its support. We now have a great opportunity to unite and take the Conservative Party forward.”
