East Midlands MEPs react to Kilroy UKIP exit
Wednesday, 27 October 2004
East Midlands Conservative MEPs have responded to the decision by Robert Kilroy-Silk to withdraw himself from the UK Independence Party in the European parliament.
Mr Kilroy-Silk, who claimed he was about to be forced out of the party, had been involved in heavy leadership speculation over the past few weeks. Roger Helmer, who was number 1 on the Conservative list for the European elections that saw Kilroy elected, said:
"If the rumours of Kilroy's imminent expulsion from the UK Independence Party are true, it seems that he jumped before he was pushed. I must congratulate UKIP for finally seeing the light and realising that Kilroy was in politics to promote one goal; furthering his own career."
Fellow East Midlands MEP, Chris Heaton-Harris added:
"It seems as if Kilroy has well and truly thrown his toys out of the pram. Incredibly, that's not the most startling development! Today he openly admitted that he has no intention of spending any significant time in his East Midlands region! It seems that for the next few months Kilroy will be touring the country holding meetings everywhere except where he is paid to work!"
