MEPs help High Peak Conservatives

Wednesday, 25th April 2007

High Peak - Both of the Conservative MEPs for the East Midlands have been in the High Peak in the last week to lend their hand to campaigning for the local elections in May.

Roger Helmer was the first to visit, when on Thursday April 5th he came to Buxton to work with High Peak Parliamentary candidate Andrew Bingham and to address a public meeting in the Old Hall Hotel about the Pavilion Gardens.

The meeting had originally been called to support the campaign against the proposed food hall in the Pavilion, but now that this plan has been abandoned, the meeting focused on possible future uses and long-term economic viability.

Mr Helmer and Mr Bingham then spent the rest of the day attending a number of events in and around the town, culminating with a meeting of Conservative Councillors and candidates to launch the Conservative's local election campaign.

Commenting on the day, Mr Helmer said:

“I am always delighted to be able to work with Andrew, and to visit Buxton. Conservatives in High Peak are in good heart and approaching the local elections with enthusiasm. I wish them well, and look forward to seeing the results on May 4th”.

Chris Heaton-Harris spent the day in and around the High Peak campaigning on the doorsteps before attending the football match at the Silverlands that saw Buxton crowned champions of the Unibond 1st Division.

Speaking today, Mr Heaton-Harris, himself a football referee, said:

“It was a very enjoyable day, the weather was perfect, and people on the doorsteps were very pleased to talk to us about a wide variety of subjects. The day was topped off by the visit to the football” .

“I was impressed by the size of the crowd, its obvious that the club is on the up, and although it was a bit nerve wracking as Buxton pressed for the crucial goal, it was a great moment when the goal came in injury time”.
