Good news for herbal medicines and health food shops
Tuesday 2 December 2003
Today the Environment Committee in the European Parliament voted through a Second Reading on the proposed EU Herbal Medicines Directive, which should be good news for UK consumers and industry, according to a local Euro-MP.
Speaking in Brussels after the vote East Midlands MEP Roger Helmer warmly welcomed this result saying:
"At the first reading Conservative MEPs tabled amendments to give much greater freedom to national Governments, and I am glad to report that this principle has now been accepted by both the Commission and the Council.
The latest proposal is that Member States should be able to take their own decisions regarding the safety and continuing sale of any herbal medicines. This will be a great relief to the many constituents who have written to me expressing their concern. The task now will be to persuade our own Government to show the same flexibility and common sense that has finally been shown by the EU."
