Local MEPs back referendum in Gedling

Wednesday, 6th February 2008

Both Conservative MEPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris will be attending and supporting the launch of the referendum on the EU Constitution (Lisbon Treaty) in Gedling tomorrow (Thursday).

Gedling has been chosen by the ‘I want a referendum’ campaign to highlight the Government’s decision to break its 2005 General Election manifesto pledge to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution, now renamed the Lisbon Treaty. Everyone on the open electoral register of voters in Gedling will receive a ballot paper from the Electoral Reform Services (ERS) the world’s leading independent ballot administrator and scrutineer.

Roger Helmer said “I am delighted that this campaign has selected Gedling in the East Midlands to have the vote that the Government is denying them. We believe the vast majority of ordinary citizens do not want this Treaty imposed upon them and we hope that as many people as possible take part.”

Chris Heaton-Harris added “I meet many people in our region who are angry about the way the European Union increasingly dominates our lives and undermines our ability to govern ourselves. Britain needs a referendum on the controversial EU reform treaty to settle the debate about our place in Europe.

I think voters will decide Britain needs a different kind of relationship with Europe. Labour politicians seem fairly certain about that too -- which is why they are doing all they can to wriggle out of their commitment to hold a referendum.”

The Launch takes place on Front Street, Arnold at 3pm on Thursday February 7th.
