Letter to the Editor

Leicester Mercury - Friday 27 September 2002

Dear Sir

So Mr. R. Webber Jones of Loughborough (letters, 24 September) thinks that the UK is already "hurting" from our isolation outside the euro and hopes "we can join the Eurozone soon."

We're "hurting" from unemployment at around half the German level. Our per capita GDP recently overtook Germany. Our inward investment record continues to be the best in Europe. If this is hurting, let's have more of it.

In fact it is the Euro-zone countries that are suffering. Don't take my word for it - the European Commission's own macro-economic report on 2001 confirms it.

Sweden and Finland have rather similar Nordic economies. Finland, which joined the euro, suffered badly from recession and the effects of September 11th, while Sweden, with its own currency and flexible exchange rates, did rather well.

How much more evidence does Mr. Webber Jones need before he understands that we're better off with the Pound?

Yours sincerely,

Roger Helmer MEP
