The East Midlands is prospering outside the Eurozone

Wednesday, 10 July 2002

Statistics show that the East Midlands is prospering outside the eurozone. Employment is on the up, exports have increased and inward investment is flooding in.

Since the launch of the euro two years ago, 122,000 new jobs have been created in the East Midlands. And despite the weak euro exports increased by 3% last year. Inward investment in the region is also improving - last year inward investment quadrupled, creating a staggering 2646 new jobs in the first two years outside the euro.

Local Conservative MEP, Roger Helmer, said:

"The East Midlands is reaping the benefits of being outside the eurozone because we have economic stability.

"Keeping the pound means higher employment, increased exports and more inward investment.

"With the Pound, we can set interest rates and monetary policy for British jobs and British prosperity. That's why on almost every measure - inflation, unemployment, growth, inward investment - Britain is out-performing the moribund eurozone."
