The East Midlands Euro Team

Elections to the European Parliament will be held in June 2004 using the regional list system of proportional representation. Due to enlargement the UK as a whole will be represented by fewer MEPs in the next Parliament than it is currently. The Electoral Commission has recently decided that the East Midlands will retain its allocation of six MEPs, and that it will be an all-postal vote election.

The six candidates who will be contesting the East Midlands region for the Conservative Party are:

1. Roger Helmer MEP
2. Chris Heaton-Harris MEP
3. Councillor Pauline Latham
4. Sharon Buckle
5. Jonathan Bullock
6. Sarah Richardson

Through the regional list system - the higher the share of the vote gained by the Conservative Party, the more of our candidates will be elected. If we only recieve enough votes to elect one MEP then Roger, as the No. 1 candidate on the list will be returned, if we recieve enough to elect two then Roger and Chris Heaton-Harris will be returned, and so on.

In 1999 three Conservatives were elected to represent the East Midlands in Brussels (Bill Newton-Dunn may have deserted to the Lib-Dems but he was elected as a Conservative). Let's see if we can match, or even improve on that next year.
