"Let the people decide" - MEPs Support Referendum Ballot
Wednesday 11 June 2003
East Midlands Euro-MPs Roger Helmer and Chris Heaton-Harris are supporting the Daily Mail's National Referendum tomorrow (12th June) on whether Britain should have a referendum on the proposed European Constitution.
The Tory MEPs have arranged for a ballot box to be made available for voting in the European Parliament in Brussels so that British MEPs and staff can take part.
The results of the National Referendum will be published in the Daily Mail in the following week and delivered to Tony Blair before the next EU Summit on the Constitution in Thessaloniki.
Speaking from the European Parliament Roger Helmer said:
"It would be a constitutional outrage for this government to ratify such a Constitution without the assent and authority of the people. I believe that all who value freedom and democracy should campaign as never before for a referendum. We say let the people decide."
Local MEP Chris Heaton-Harris added:
"We believe that the people of Britain should have the opportunity to vote on a European constitution. The Constitution would mean great changes for British democracy and the way the British people are governed. The British people should be trusted enough to decide on it for themselves."
