Constitution vote demanded
Saturday 22 November 2003
People should have their say on the proposed European constitution in a referendum, according to a Derby councillor.
Tory Pauline Latham, a city councillor for the Oakwood ward and an MEP candidate for the East Midlands, is calling on Derby City Council to write to Prime Minister Tony Blair asking for a national referendum on the European constitution.
She will ask her fellow councillors to back her at a full meeting of Derby City Council on Wednesday. Mrs Latham said: "This is something that will effect everyone and it will have huge implications for the city council.
The Constitution will give the European Union shared competence over home affairs, transport, energy, social policy, economic and social cohesion, consumer protection and the environment. More legislation bring local government will be decided at European rather than national level."
East Midlands MEP Roger Helmer added "Eight-eight per cent of the public want a referendum on the Constitution, yet the government refuse. It's time to let the British people decide what's good for Britain. It's time for a referendum"
