Blair's referendum must be on the Constitution
Tuesday, 6 April 2004
East Midlands Conservative MEPs Chris Heaton-Harris and Roger Helmer have renewed their demands for a referendum on the EU Constitution, following reports in the media that the Prime Minister is planning to hold a wider poll on Britain's place in Europe.
The Tory Euro-MPs, who have been campaigning for a referendum on the EU Constitution for months, have hit back saying that a wider poll would be mislead the public as to what was the core issue and that any referendum should concentrate on the Constitution alone.
Speaking form the European Parliament in Brussels, Conservative Euro-MP, Chris Heaton-Harris, said:
"There must be a referendum on whether Britain should sign up to the EU Constitution, not on some bogus issue of staying in or leaving Europe.
The Constitution will transfer a huge number of powers from London to Brussels. It will mark the biggest change in the way Britain is run for over 300 years and the people of this country must have a say."
Euro-MP Roger Helmer added:
"Tony Blair must give British people their say on the EU Constitution instead of, once again, trying to deceive them into believing that he has given in to their demands.
The Prime Minister should come clean now - will he hold a referendum on the Constitution or not?"
