Letter to the Editor
Derby Evening Telegraph - Tuesday, 5 November 2002
Dear Sir,
I thought that Labour MEP Phillip Whitehead was a former journalist, so I am astonished by his fractured English. In his article (DET, 5 Nov) he writes, "President Bush's disgraceful Farm Act, for example, is one of the things which Roger claims to want from an efficient agricultural policy".
I do not claim any such thing. I did not refer to President Bush's Farm Act in my earlier article. I do not approve of the US Farm Act. I am against excessive subsidies. I specifically insisted that any British farm subsidy regime would have to be within WTO rules. Phillip is quite simply making things up, and he owes me an apology.
I was disappointed that a supporter of liberal trade policies like President Bush would uncharacteristically increase farm subsidies in the USA. But I recognise that he did so for short-term electoral reasons. After Bush's sparkling success in the mid-term elections, I hope he will think again.
Yours sincerely,
Roger Helmer MEP
