End to British beef ban long overdue

East Midlands beef as safe as any in the world, say local MEPs
A Conservative MEP for the East Midlands today welcomed the news that EU experts have finally approved the total lifting of the ban on exports of British beef.
Speaking from Brussels, Chris Heaton-Harris said:
"Farmers in the region have been waiting ten long years for this news. I'm delighted but it's long overdue. "The export ban on meat from younger cattle was lifted seven years ago but the red tape was so onerous that British farmers lost a huge chunk of their market share. Now we are on an equal footing again. "Experts agree not only that British beef is safe but that it is as safe as any beef in the world. It is also a high quality product and much sought after.
His colleague Roger Helmer added:
"The onus is now on the British government to help our farmers - not that it has a good record in this regard. We need to see a concerted and determined effort by ministers and the Meat and Livestock Commission to restore British beef to its rightful place in international markets."
