Ashes sing-along in Strasbourg
Tuesday, 6th September 2005
STRASBOURG—East Midlands Conservative MEPs Chris Heaton-Harris and Roger Helmer joined UK staff at the European Parliament in Strasbourg today to belt out the hymn 'Jerusalem' in support of England's cricketers.
Conservative MEP Chris Heaton-Harris, who organised the impromptu outburst of patriotism, led the singing of the hymn (words by William Blake) in the middle of the modernist circular tower where MEPs have their offices. They gathered at precisely 10.25 BST, just five minutes before England's batsmen strode out in the final Ashes test.
MEPs and staff from other EU countries looked on in surprise and confusion, being more used to serenades of Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' - the EU anthem - by visiting choirs.
Chris Heaton-Harris said:
"I don't know if our singing will help boost England's chances in the Test match, but it certainly made us feel good. This was the best way we could think of to wish the England team every success. Go for it lads! At least do better than the footballers!"
