Letter to the Editor

Sleaford Target - Tuesday, 26th September 2006

Dear Editor

I was very interested in an article sent to me from the Sleaford Target.

It covered an issue regarding MEP Roger Helmer and his stance towards animal rights.

Mr Helmer has personally visited our wildlife rehabilitation centre in Isham Northants where we discussed in depth the importance of keeping the breed and release scheme for Barn Owls going after the Labour Government stopped all licensed release schemes in May 2002.

I can fully endorse his commitment to animal welfare and I felt strongly that he believed there was a distinct difference between animal welfare and fanatical animal rights.Mr Helmer has raised the issues of Barn owl decline but sadly the Government have not listened and a press release on Monday September 25th from the Barn Owl trust has highlighted a serious further decline in their numbers.

Animal rights pressure brought about the banning of Fox hunting yet many of these AR supporters endorse the use of fireworks as entertainment where death and trauma caused by fireworks is over double to the amount of foxes killed by all hunts.Soft options and ignorance unfortunately fuel many of the Animal rights campaigns and like in the case where AR fanatics released 500 mink into the New forest their actions can have an adverse affect causing more harm than good.

Many of the animal rights supporters are the very people that set up Sanctuaries with no hands on experience, no veterinary support, no finances and a no euthanize policy which in itself leads to over crowding un treated animals and a sanctuary over run by horrendously disabled animals. Animal welfare is a very important issue and must not be clouded by animal rights agenda.
