US public policy institute honours MEP
Friday 4th November 2005
Strasbourg – East Midlands Conservative MEP Roger Helmer today became the first international legislator member of ALEC when he was presented with the International Membership Certificate by Representative Earl Ehrhart (GA) ALEC's 2005 National Chairman.
The American Legislative Council (ALEC) is a public policy institute interested in developing international networks to promote conservative values around the world. It is a non partisan organization of 2400 state legislators and significant private sector members.
Since its founding, ALEC has amassed an unmatched record of achieving ground-breaking changes in public policy with victories in policies such as mandatory minimum sentencing for violent criminals, teacher competency testing, pension reform, and Enterprise Zones.
Speaking from Strasbourg, Mr Helmer, who is already ALEC’s Adam Smith scholar, said: "I am very proud to become ALEC's first international legislator member. At ALEC conferences in Washington and elsewhere I have found ALEC's members, and philosophy, very much in line with Conservative principles. In Brussels we Conservatives are an endangered species. In Washington, we're among friends".
